VMWare VMotion

Filed under: AdminScripts — saltwetfish @ 12:52 am

Just had time today to testing out Vmotion with VMware and it RULZ!! What a great feature! I had my virtual server in terminal session and with task manager running, I started to Vmotion it to anothe host and the virtual server didn’t even know it happened… there was no glitchs and task manager continued running inbetween the host moves, as if nothing happened. That’s cool technology!

Well for those who don’t know it, Vmotion is a feature in VMWare ESX server that allows you to seemlessly migration virtual machines from one host to another, without downtime. Of course to do that, you need to setup a VMWare farm, have a good set of servers and shared SAN connections and disks (http://www.vmware.com/products/vi/vc/vmotion.html)
